What is an umbrella policy and what should you look for in an umbrella policy? Hi, I’m Frank Nunes. I’m a California Personal Injury Trial Attorney, practicing in the State of California. An umbrella policy or an umbrella insurance policy provides additional coverage above and beyond the limits of your existing policy. Oftentimes people purchase one, so they have extra added protection in case something they do causes harm to another person and there are catastrophic injuries, and that way they want to have enough insurance to cover it.
What you might not know, and most people don’t know is that you can purchase an umbrella insurance policy that protects you not only from the harms and losses that you may cause by an accident but by the harms and losses that you may suffer at the hands of another careless person who doesn’t have enough insurance. So it’s very important to read your policy and check with your agent. Specifically, ask your agent, “Do I have third-party coverage?” Obviously, yes, that covers the third party that you hit.
But then get down to brass tacks. “Do I have first-party coverage as well?” That’s the insurance that will cover you and the people in your car if the person that hurts you doesn’t have enough coverage for your injuries.
